At its heart, Islam rests on what a Muslim believes and how a Muslim worships. The first is captured in the six articles of faith (iman), and the second in the five pillars.
The six articles of faith
- Belief in Allah — the One God, without partner or equal.
- Belief in the angels — created beings who carry out what Allah commands.
- Belief in the books — the revelations sent by Allah, with the Quran as the final one.
- Belief in the prophets — from Adam to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the final messenger.
- Belief in the Last Day — resurrection and accountability before Allah.
- Belief in divine decree — that all things happen by Allah's knowledge and will.
The five pillars
- Shahada— the testimony that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His messenger.
- Salah— the five daily prayers that anchor the day in remembrance of Allah.
- Zakat— a yearly share of one's wealth given to those in need.
- Sawm— fasting the month of Ramadan from dawn to sunset.
- Hajj— the pilgrimage to Mecca, obligatory once for those who are able.
