Seerah & Prophets

The Seerah is the life story of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and it sits within a larger belief in all of Allah's prophets. This page offers a concise timeline of his life, an overview of the prophets in Islam, and some of the lessons their stories hold.

What is the Seerah and why it matters

Seerah refers to the documented life and example of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It matters because it shows how the message of Islam was lived in real circumstances — in hardship and ease, in family, leadership, and worship. Studying it turns abstract teachings into a living example to follow.

A concise timeline

  • Born around 570 CE in Mecca, into the respected tribe of Quraysh, and orphaned at a young age.
  • Early life— he grew up known for honesty and trustworthiness, earning the title al-Amin, the trustworthy.
  • First revelation at age 40 — while reflecting in the cave of Hira, he received the first words of the Quran through the angel Jibril.
  • Early Meccan call — he invited people to worship the one God, and he and the early Muslims faced years of hardship and persecution.
  • The Hijrah, 622 CE — the migration to Medina, a turning point that marks the start of the Islamic calendar.
  • Building the community — in Medina he established a society founded on faith, justice, and brotherhood, through significant events and trials.
  • The conquest of Mecca — the city was entered peacefully, and he met former enemies with remarkable forgiveness.
  • Farewell pilgrimage and passing, 632 CE — he delivered his farewell sermon and passed away in Medina, having conveyed the message in full.

The prophets in Islam

Belief in all of Allah's prophets is part of iman. Muslims honour every messenger sent to guide humanity, making no distinction in rejecting any of them. Among those named in the Quran are:

  • Adam(peace be upon him) — the first human and first prophet.
  • Nuh / Noah(peace be upon him) — who called his people patiently over a very long time.
  • Ibrahim / Abraham (peace be upon him) — a model of pure devotion to the one God.
  • Musa / Moses(peace be upon him) — who was given the Torah and confronted Pharaoh.
  • Isa / Jesus(peace be upon him) — the Messiah, given the Injil and supported by clear signs.

Muslims believe Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final prophet, the seal of the messengers, as indicated in the Quran (33:40).

Lessons from the Seerah

  • Patience under trial — steadfastness through years of difficulty without abandoning principle.
  • Mercy and forgiveness — meeting harm with restraint, as shown at the conquest of Mecca.
  • Trustworthiness — honesty and integrity valued even by those who opposed him.
  • Justice and community — building bonds of brotherhood and fairness in Medina.
